"Arachnid of Paradise"
This rendering of an old agave plant, with its disturbingly arachnid gestures, was one of my early experiments to create alienated beauty. I went about this by inverting the black and white values of this image and then recolouring the subject to approximate roughly its original hues - so that at first glance the plant looks relatively "normal" to the eye - but then I introduced a striking enhancement in the vivid leaf tips and the "tarantula's" central body tone. The result resembles water-color painting, but brings a controlled color-intensity and structural precision to the subject that is not typical of that medium.
