Black Crows Invaded Our Country by Hunter Madsen

Black Crows Invaded Our Country

This image of otherness was created on a lovely Berlin side street, as a resident across from my hotel room eyed me suspiciously.  The title is adapted from a story recounted by a holocaust survivor. When she was in second grade, her teacher - "a very tall man, his hair was concretely plastered smooth" - warned the class that "black crows invaded our country long ago, and he pointed right at me."  The survivor's voice tape became material for a haunting chamber piece by Steve Reich, titled Different Trains.
