"Blue Blanket, Red Cells"

    

Felled by lymphoma, my spouse Marcus staggered into the hospital with only one third as many red blood cells as needed.  His remaining flesh was melting away. We both understood that this berth, in the hospital wing housing the most desperate cases, would be his death bed, should the new treatment fail.
