"Distempers of the Spirit - My Life as a Dog"

Like it or not, gay kids are born that way, and our species has always produced a lot of them.  Conservatively estimated, at the present time the human race includes more than half a billion homosexuals, lesbians, bisexuals, and transsexuals. The overwhelming majority of these lead hidden and hunted lives.

Sexual preference in most people is fixed quite early in life, has a biological component, and appears to be immutable. This suggests strongly that, if there's a God in heaven to care, then He/She/Ze must like having LGBT people around quite a lot.

Yet none of this has stopped societies around the world from inventing reasons to denigrate, torment, and ostracize generation after generation of LGBT children in their care. What this abuse causes in many of them is life-altering trauma based in fear, guilt, and shame, three mortal distempers that hound the human spirit. As it happens, these shades anguished my childhood, too. And the child begat the man.

“If you are silent about your pain, they’ll kill you and say you enjoyed it.”
