Lord of Mayhem
Exploring the eerily silent disaster site of a Schrebergarten cottage fire near Hamburg, Germany, I stepped through a charred doorway to confront a small presence, sitting on the floor before me, staring back with a dead-cold eye as though defiant, or maybe triumphal, and emanating such darkness that I felt an un-modern feeling, spiritual dread.
A toddler's plastic rocking horse - its plastic substructure exposed like bones and veining - had been transformed by the inferno into a kind of vulture, splattered with flame retardant. I took it as an omen.
