"Nazi Cardinal" by Hunter Madsen

"Nazi Cardinal"

The reference is to Adolf Bertram, the Catholic clergyman who went down in history as the "Nazi cardinal" for applauding German aggression in Poland and France while suppressing church resistance to the Nazi regime.  The skull, whose bishop-like marking sparked the idea for this grim memorial, is actually a South Seas artifact housed at the Frei Universitet.

"Of all bad men, religious bad men are the worst... What was before him appeared no longer a creature of corrupted will. It was corruption itself to which will was attached only as an instrument." - C.S. Lewis, Reflections on the Psalms, Perelandra
