Headless Black mannikins - creepy, spike-like, sexually charged - signal the department store's civic virtue and style chic while they reduce to nullity any sight of specific Black persons, who are not, of course, the intended buyers of this clothing. Wealthy Whites and Asians do not generally idealize themselves as Blacks, although this repugnance may be in transition.
