Too much of a good thing can be wonderful, as Mae West could tell you. The word gluttony originated from the Latin gluttire, meaning "to gulp down or swallow." Fully seventy percent of Americans gulp and gobble more than they should, and get fat. More than half of those go on to become clinically obese, which opens the door to deadly heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and sixty other ruinously chronic ailments. We learn to embrace our outsized appetites and celebrate the parade of excess. "I like restraint," shrugged West, "if it doesn't go too far."
