The reversal of light values in art created from photo film negatives is, of course, a time-honored mode of beauty alienation, tracing back to the very infancy of photographic art, a time when, because accurate colour photography had yet to be invented, conventional monochromatic treatments constituted the normal aesthetic experience from which some modernist photographers sought to deviate.  Next stop for artists such as Man Ray and Maholy-Nagy: the photogram.
