See the profound poem of the same title, by Marianne Moore. I share a particular love of this poem with my former friend, the writer Fenton Johnson, who, in the process of courageously overcoming a grave illness, has indeed "acceded to mortality and in his imprisonment, rises upon himself as the sea in a chasm."
