As Mae West once quipped, too much of a good thing can be wonderful. The word gluttony originated from the Latin gluttire, meaning "to gulp down or swallow." More than two in three Americans have gobbled enough to become fat, and half of those fatties waddle up to other excesses as well: increased heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, just for starters. Good reason to cut back, perhaps? "I like restraint," shrugged West, "if it doesn't go too far."
